M First 5k Race (and new PR)

Since it's pretty quite in the forums still, I figured I'd share. For the longest time I would run at most 2 miles (yes I'm American). This was also fairly infrequently.  Seeing all this fitness stuff from Steve be developed I started to think maybe I should workout more often. But it wasn't until I started listening to Arnold Schwarzenegger's podcast (sorry Steve! But I'd totally be into listening to a fitness podcast from you) that I finally decided I'm going to kick it up this summer. I set my goal of eventually running a 5k (since I could already do 2 miles).

So I started out by just running 2 miles consistently 2-3 times a week, without timing it, as my goal here was to just build the habit. Finally about a month ago, I was on a run and when I hit the 2 mile mark I said why not, lets go to 3 miles. I finished that with a time of 27:55 on that run. About a week later I signed up for a proper 5k race to hopefully keep up that momentum (though actually running 5k, instead of 3 miles). This last weekend was that race, and I have finished with a time of 26:02, a 2 minute improvement and my new PR! Of course I was absolutely dead afterwards but it was definitely worth it! My new goal is now getting under 25 minutes.

With that under my belt I'm looking into doing some more strength training to diversify my workouts, and I figure Steve will be a great resource to get me started, and I know very little about making my own workout plan. I appreciate the website Steve!

That’s awesome to hear my friend!

26m for a 5k is way faster then I’ve ever gone (I suck at running myself!)

Good luck with your progress, feel free to direct any questions you may have regarding strength/resistance training my way and I’ll do my best to answer.

Steve.
